Tripura elections: Turnout declined sharply

The turnout in the Tripura assembly election, in which the ruling Communist regime is fighting their last battle in the northern soil against the saffron regime which is trying to shatter the leftist bastions, has marked a sharp declination, indicating that neither the communist regime nor the new arrivals have succeeded in gaining the confidence of the voters who are mainly belonging to the tribal community.

In the year 2013 assembly election, in which the leftists gained an astounding victory showcasing their strength in their stronghold, the turnout was over ninety-one per cent.

Clearly showing the sharp decline in the popularity of ruling government and the significant increase in the acceptance of the saffron preachers, in the 2014 general election, the turnout lost at least seven per cent (the turnout of that year was eighty-four per cent).

This year, in this election, the turnout has been identified as seventy-nine per cent, at least five points lower than what the state witnessed in the last general election.  

There are nearly sixty seats in the Tripura assembly election. This time, the election has only taken place in fifty-nine seats.

The election for the remaining seat has been postponed due to the unexpected demise of one of the candidates who filed nomination in that constituency.

Notably, this time, unlike the previous elections, no serious violence has been reported in the state.

In this year’s Tripura election, for the first time in the history of the state assembly elections, the Voter-Verifiable Paper Audit Trail machine has been used.
