Tripura Shuts Down Internet in District After Mob Violence Over Tribal Youth’s Death

Authorities in a Tripura district have cut off internet access and prohibited large gatherings after mob violence erupted over the death of a tribal youth. The police have arrested four individuals in connection with the incident.

Despite the implementation of prohibitory orders and the deployment of substantial security forces, tension persists in the tribal-dominated Ganda Twisa subdivision of Tripura’s Dhalai district.

The violence, which began on Friday night, escalated into acts of vandalism and arson following the death of the tribal youth earlier that day. Officials reported that crowds went on a rampage, setting homes on fire and looting shops after 20-year-old Parameshwar Reang succumbed to injuries sustained in an assault by members of another community on July 7.

The four arrested individuals are allegedly connected to the assault. Former Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar has discussed the situation with current Chief Minister Manik Saha, urging him to take necessary measures to restore order. Tripura government sources have indicated that the situation is now under control, with peace meetings being held to maintain law and order and additional forces deployed in the area.
