Venus Williams Debuts Groundbreaking Merino Wool Tenniswear at US Open

Tennis icon Venus Williams made a stylish return to the US Open, stepping onto the court in a performance kit crafted entirely from Merino wool. The innovative sportswear, designed by New York-based label Luar in partnership with Woolmark, was showcased during her exhibition match with John McEnroe. The collaboration aims to challenge conventional ideas of tenniswear by blending high fashion, natural performance innovation, and elite sport.

The custom collection, created by Luar designer Raul Lopez, featured two distinct looks for Williams. The on-court style included a black knitted Merino wool mesh dress with a pleated skirt, paired with a Luar track jacket, while the off-court ensemble featured a beige two-piece knit skirt and top for media appearances. The collection also included functional wool accessories such as a water-resistant messenger bag made from 100 percent Optim wool, along with a wool hat and scrunchie, merging utility with elegance.

Commenting on the collaboration, Lopez emphasized wool’s versatility, performance qualities, and fashion appeal, calling it an ideal choice for athletes like Williams. Woolmark’s managing director John Roberts added that the project proves Merino wool’s potential in modern sportswear, stating: “Seeing Venus Williams bring this outfit to life on the court proves what we’ve always known—Merino wool doesn’t just belong in performance wear, it excels in it.”
