WTRLSS Launches Water-Saving Digital Denim Dyeing Technology
Bio-tech company WTRLSS has launched a digital dyeing technology aimed at transforming the $100 billion global denim industry by cutting water use in the dyeing and finishing process by up to 99.99%. The company says its technology reduces water consumption from around 75 litres per pair of jeans to just two tablespoons, while also cutting energy use by 90%.
The technology combines bioscience and digital processes to create denim through a simplified, single-step dyeing method. WTRLSS says the innovation could reduce costs linked to water consumption, wastewater treatment and recycling, while allowing denim manufacturing to take place in a wider range of locations. Several brands and manufacturers have begun trials, with Bangladesh-based Ha-Meem Group partnering with the company on a commercial production pilot.
WTRLSS, headquartered in Los Angeles with its European headquarters in Basel, Switzerland, was formerly known as Lab Denim. The company says its technology is designed for industrial-scale adoption, beginning with denim before expanding into other textiles such as cotton, jute, bamboo and linen. Ha-Meem Group said it aims to bring the technology to commercial scale, positioning Bangladesh at the forefront of more sustainable denim manufacturing.
