YouTuber Booked for Hate Speech After Confronting Jain Monks in Uttarakhand

A YouTuber named Suraj Singh Pharswan has been booked for hate speech after a video of him pestering two Digambar Jain monks about their lack of clothing went viral. The incident took place in the Tottaghati area under Devprayag police station in Tehri Garhwal district. Following orders from Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, the state’s special task force (STF) registered a first information report (FIR) against Pharswan for promoting enmity and deliberately outraging religious feelings.

Director General of Police Abhinav Kumar stated that the video contained objectionable comments that hurt the sentiments of the Digambar Jain community, who practice nudity as a symbol of renouncing worldly possessions. Pharswan has been charged under sections 153-A and 295-A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and section 67-A of the Information Technology Act. The case has been transferred to Tehri, and the STF is investigating further, including efforts to identify the monks involved.

In the aftermath, Pharswan issued a public apology, admitting his approach was flawed and stressing that his intention was not to offend but to learn about Jain practices. However, the controversy led to his legal troubles, and additional superintendent of police, JR Joshi, confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, with authorities attempting to contact the monks to record their statements.
