Chandigarh High Court Grants Week-long Protection to Businessman Alleging Threats from BJP MP Kirron Kher

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has intervened in a petition filed by businessman Chaittnya Aggarwal, directing the Chandigarh Police to ensure the safety of Aggarwal and his family for a week. Aggarwal, through his counsel, alleged threats to his and his family’s lives from BJP MP Kirron Kher and her aide, Sahdev Salaria. The petition highlighted financial disagreements between Aggarwal and the respondents, stemming from a purported investment of ₹8 crore provided by Kher, of which Aggarwal claims to have returned ₹2 crore, seeking time due to market fluctuations to repay the remainder.

Aggarwal further alleged continuous harassment and pressure from Kirron Kher and her aide to immediately repay the pending amount along with interest. However, the public prosecutor revealed that no formal complaints regarding these alleged threats had been lodged at any police station by Aggarwal, his wife, or daughters. Despite this, the court, considering the gravity of the allegations and the parties involved, deemed it fit to grant protection, stipulating stringent conditions including confining Aggarwal and his wife to their residence except for medical or essential household purposes.

The court’s order emphasized that any violation of the prescribed conditions would automatically revoke the protection granted. While the response from Kirron Kher is awaited, the court refrained from commenting on the merits of the case but asserted the constitutional obligation to ensure the safety and liberty of individuals. This development marks a significant intervention by the High Court to address the alleged threats, albeit without conclusive evidence, underscoring the importance of ensuring safety in such contentious situations.
