Civic Volunteer Arrested in Kolkata Doctor’s Murder Amid Allegations and Speculation

A 33-year-old civic volunteer, Sanjoy Roy, was arrested on August 10 for the alleged rape and murder of a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The arrest followed the discovery of the doctor’s half-naked body in the hospital’s seminar hall. Roy, who had frequent access to the hospital and reportedly wielded influence akin to a police officer, has admitted to the crime, according to the police.

His mother claims he has been framed, while his sister, despite her doubts, believes he should face punishment if guilty. Neighbors describe Roy as a troubling figure, with reports emerging that he was involved in questionable activities, including visiting red-light areas and being addicted to pornography.
