France Court Rejects Government Bid to Suspend Shein Marketplace

A Paris Court of Appeal on Thursday rejected the French government’s attempt to suspend Chinese online platform Shein’s marketplace, upholding an earlier ruling delivered in December. The initial decision had dismissed the request to block the platform in France for three months, stating that such a move would be “disproportionate.” The government had subsequently appealed the ruling, seeking stricter action against the fast-fashion giant.

The case stems from a controversy that erupted in November, when France’s consumer watchdog обнаружed the sale of prohibited items on Shein’s marketplace, including sex dolls resembling children and banned weapons. The findings triggered widespread scrutiny of the platform across several European countries. In response, Shein swiftly banned all sex dolls and suspended its adult products category globally from November 3.

Following the latest court decision, Shein stated that it has significantly strengthened its controls over sellers and products in recent months to ensure a safer shopping experience for consumers in France. The company also emphasized that it has maintained close communication with French and European authorities as it works to address regulatory concerns and restore trust.
