Adidas Apologizes to Mexican Indigenous Community Over Sandal Design Controversy

Adidas has issued a public apology to an Indigenous community in Mexico after facing backlash for using their traditional huarache sandals as inspiration for a new product. The footwear, marketed as the “Oaxaca Slip-On,” sparked criticism from local authorities and President Claudia Sheinbaum, who condemned the move as cultural appropriation of Indigenous heritage.

Karen Gonzalez, legal director of Adidas Mexico, acknowledged that the design had been inspired by an original Indigenous model and expressed regret for the misstep. She assured that the company would collaborate with the affected community, which depends heavily on craftwork for its livelihood. U.S. fashion designer Willy Chavarria, who conceived the design, also issued a statement saying he “deeply” regretted the incident.

The controversy adds to a growing list of disputes between Mexico and global fashion brands accused of exploiting Indigenous art and designs. In recent years, companies including Zara, Shein, and Carolina Herrera have also faced accusations of cultural appropriation. “It’s collective intellectual property. There must be compensation. The heritage law must be complied with,” Sheinbaum said earlier this month.
