Afghanistan Embassy in New Delhi Permanently Closes Amid Diplomatic Strains

The Afghanistan embassy in New Delhi officially announced the permanent closure of its diplomatic mission, effective November 23, 2023, citing persistent challenges from the Indian government. This decision comes after the embassy ceased operations on September 30, expressing hope for a shift in the Indian government’s stance to allow normal functioning. Addressing concerns of internal conflict and allegations of diplomats switching allegiance to the Taliban, the embassy clarified that the closure stemmed from broader policy changes and interests.

In a released statement, the embassy expressed gratitude to Afghan citizens in India for their understanding and support throughout its tenure. Despite facing limitations in resources and power, the embassy claimed to have tirelessly worked for the betterment of the Afghan community in India amid the absence of a legitimate government in Kabul. Noting a significant decline in the Afghan community in India over the past two years, the embassy highlighted a nearly halved population since August 2021, with minimal new visas issued during this period.

Moreover, the embassy stated efforts to maintain transparency, accountability, and fair treatment for the Afghan community while facing challenges that aimed to tarnish their image. It asserted that its committed team worked diligently to prioritize the interests of the Afghan populace, advocating for humanitarian aid, education scholarships, trade facilitation, and the formation of an inclusive government in Afghanistan. The embassy confirmed the departure of Afghan Republic diplomats from India, leaving the mission solely to the Indian government’s discretion, signaling the end of the Afghan Republic’s presence in India.

This closure follows the embassy’s earlier announcement on November 1, citing “lack of resources” and the Taliban regime’s failure to meet Afghanistan’s interests. The embassy denounced certain consulates as operating under instructions and funding from Kabul, not aligned with the objectives of a legitimate government but serving the interests of an “illegitimate regime.” The statement concluded with a reiterated commitment to supporting Afghanistan amidst challenging times and appreciation for India’s assistance over the past 22 years.
