Bangladeshi TV Journalist Found Dead in Dhaka Lake

In a tragic incident in Dhaka, Bangladesh, Sarah Rahanuma, a 32-year-old newsroom editor at Gazi TV, was found dead in Hatirjheel Lake today. Her body was discovered floating in the lake by a passerby named Sagar, who subsequently transported her to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH). Medical officials confirmed her death upon arrival.

Sarah’s untimely death has sparked concern over freedom of expression in Bangladesh. Sajeeb Wazed, son of the ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, condemned the incident as a “brutal attack” on press freedom. Gazi TV, where Sarah worked, is known for its secular stance and is owned by Golam Dastagir Gazi, who was recently arrested, adding to the controversy surrounding the case.

The circumstances leading up to Sarah’s death remain unclear. The night before her death, she posted a poignant message on Facebook, expressing regrets and a sense of finality. The case is under investigation by the Hatirjheel police station, with her body currently held at the DMCH morgue for further examination.
