BJP MP Nishikant Dubey Demands Union Territory Status for Parts of Jharkhand, West Bengal
In the Lok Sabha on Thursday, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey called for parts of Jharkhand and West Bengal to be declared a union territory to address challenges posed by illegal immigration from Bangladesh. Dubey also demanded the implementation of an Assam-like National Register of Citizens (NRC) to prevent demographic changes in these regions. He highlighted that the tribal population in the Santhal Parganas region of Jharkhand had significantly declined due to alleged infiltration from Bangladesh.
Dubey expressed concern over the impact of illegal immigration on the local demographics, claiming that Bangladeshi intruders were marrying tribal women, resulting in a decrease in the tribal population. He cited specific regions such as Malda, Murshidabad, Araria, Kishanganj, Katihar, and the Santhal Parganas as areas that should be designated as a union territory to protect the Hindu population from disappearing. Dubey urged the formation of a committee to investigate and implement the recommendations of the 2010 Law Commission report regarding conversion and marriage permissions.
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) objected to Dubey’s remarks, accusing him of raising divisive issues. TMC MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay asserted that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had firmly opposed the implementation of the NRC in West Bengal. The TMC called for Dubey’s remarks to be expunged from the parliamentary proceedings, emphasizing their stance against any initiatives that could foster religious or communal divisions.
