Congress Alleges Major Bank Accounts Frozen by Income Tax Department

In a significant development that has stirred political circles in India, the Congress party has claimed that the Income Tax department has frozen four of its primary bank accounts on what they describe as “flimsy grounds.” This action comes just ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, raising concerns about its impact on the democratic processes in the country. According to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Treasurer Ajay Maken, the party was informed that banks are not honoring the cheques issued by them, leading to severe financial constraints that affect their ability to pay bills, salaries, and conduct political activities.

The Congress leadership, including Kharge and party leader Rahul Gandhi, have voiced their concerns, labeling this move as a “deep assault on Indian democracy.” The party alleges that this freeze affects not only the main party accounts but also those of the Youth Congress, with the Income Tax department demanding a recovery of ₹210 crore. This has put the party in a difficult position, especially with the Lok Sabha elections around the corner, impacting their political campaigns and operational capabilities.

The Congress has strongly criticized the ruling BJP government, accusing it of misusing power to target the opposition. Kharge expressed fears over the future of elections and the multi-party system in India, calling on the judiciary to protect the nation’s democracy. The Congress has vowed to fight against what they term as “autocracy,” indicating a turbulent time ahead in Indian politics as the election season approaches.
