Delhi High Court Rejects Mahua Moitra’s Plea in ‘Cash for Query’ Case

In a significant ruling, the Delhi High Court has dismissed the plea of Trinamool Congress leader Mahua Moitra, which sought to restrain Bharatiya Janata Party MP Nishikant Dubey and lawyer Anant Dehadrai from alleging her involvement in a bribery scandal with businessman Darshan Hiranandani. The allegations pertain to Moitra supposedly accepting bribes to pose questions in Parliament that were critical of the Narendra Modi government.

Moitra, aged 49, faced severe repercussions as she was expelled from the Lok Sabha in December, following accusations in the ‘cash for query’ case. The ethics panel, delving into the matter, found her guilty of accepting substantial bribes, including a payment of ₹2 crore in cash along with various “luxury gift items.” These actions were allegedly taken in exchange for her raising questions in the Parliament, thereby compromising the integrity of her role as a parliamentarian.

The controversy further deepened with accusations against Moitra of compromising parliamentary security by sharing her confidential login credentials for the parliamentary website with Mr. Hiranandani. This allowed him direct access to post questions, thereby bypassing the conventional procedures and checks in place to uphold the sanctity of parliamentary proceedings. The court’s decision marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing discourse surrounding ethics and integrity within the political sphere.
