Delhi Water Crisis Escalates as AAP Minister Accuses Haryana of Withholding Supply
Amidst a burgeoning water crisis in Delhi, Atishi, a minister from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), has raised alarm over the alleged obstruction of the capital’s rightful water share by the neighboring state of Haryana. Speaking to reporters, Atishi lamented the exacerbation of the situation, attributing it to Haryana’s actions despite ongoing efforts by the Supreme Court to address Delhi’s water woes. According to Atishi, while Delhi awaits its entitled water supply, Haryana’s actions are contributing to a significant reduction in the flow, causing distress among Delhi’s residents.
Under an established agreement among Haryana, Delhi, and the Upper Yamuna region, Delhi is entitled to receive 1,050 cusecs of water daily through the Munak Canal. Atishi explained that the flow is measured by a flow meter, and historically, Delhi has received approximately 980 to 1,000 cusecs. However, since June 1, the flow has seen a drastic decrease. On June 7 alone, only 840 cusecs were delivered, highlighting a concerning trend of diminishing water supply to the capital.
Atishi emphasized the repercussions of this reduced supply, particularly on Delhi’s water treatment plants, including those crucial for supplying water to various parts of the city. With water allocation to seven of Delhi’s plants at risk, Atishi warned of potential chaos if the situation persists unchecked. She called upon the Haryana government to provide an explanation for the discrepancy in water supply, alleging intentional withholding that defies the directives of the Supreme Court. The minister’s remarks underscore the urgency of resolving the conflict to avert a deepening crisis in Delhi’s water supply.
