Dhanush Files Civil Suit Against Nayanthara Over Copyright Infringement in Netflix Documentary
In a legal battle, actor-producer Dhanush has filed a civil suit in the Madras High Court against actress Nayanthara, her husband Vignesh Shivan, and their production house, Rowdy Pictures Pvt. Ltd., for allegedly using visuals from his film Naanum Rowdy Dhaan without a No Objection Certificate (NOC). The visuals were reportedly featured in the Netflix documentary Nayanthara: Beyond The Fairy Tale. Dhanush’s production house, Wunderbar Films Pvt. Ltd., also sought permission to sue Netflix India, represented by Los Gatos Production Services India LLP, within the High Court’s jurisdiction.
The legal tussle escalated after Dhanush’s lawyer issued a statement demanding the removal of the alleged infringing content within 24 hours, failing which the actor threatened to seek Rs. 10 crore in damages. The Madras High Court granted permission for the suit after hearing preliminary arguments from senior counsels representing both parties. Meanwhile, Nayanthara countered the claims in an open letter, criticizing Dhanush for his “all-time low” actions and expressing gratitude to producers like Shah Rukh Khan, Chiranjeevi, and Ram Charan for swiftly granting NOCs for their footage used in the documentary.
The controversy has sparked a heated debate in the industry over copyright and permissions. While Dhanush asserts infringement of his intellectual property, Nayanthara highlights the collaborative support she received from others in the industry. The case is now expected to proceed further in the Madras High Court.
