NIA and CBI Extradite LeT Operative Salman Khan from Rwanda in Bengaluru Radicalisation Case
In a significant operation, the National Investigation Agency (NIA), in coordination with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), successfully extradited Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) operative Salman Khan from Rwanda on November 27. Khan was implicated in the radicalisation and recruitment of inmates at Bengaluru Central Prison as part of a terror conspiracy spearheaded by fellow LeT member T Naseer. The extradition was facilitated by the Rwanda Investigation Bureau, Interpol, and National Central Bureaus, following a Red Notice issued by Interpol in August 2024.
Salman Khan, previously imprisoned in a POCSO case from 2018-2022, was allegedly radicalised during his incarceration and played a key role in distributing explosives for terror activities. The NIA discovered his involvement during its investigation into the 2023 seizure of arms, grenades, and other ammunition in Bengaluru. Khan fled India after the conspiracy was uncovered and was subsequently declared a fugitive under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act. His extradition marks the 17th such success by Indian agencies in major NIA cases since 2020.
The NIA’s crackdown follows other recent extraditions, including Barkat Ali Khan, wanted in a 2012 rioting case, and Raihan Arabikkalalarikkal, charged with sexual offences in Kerala. These operations highlight the CBI’s coordinated efforts with global law enforcement via Interpol channels, which have led to the return of over 100 fugitives since 2021, further bolstering India’s fight against terrorism and transnational crimes.
