From Village Dreams to Ocean Realities: N M Panicker’s Rise to Global Success
N M Panicker’s journey from humble beginnings to global success is nothing short of remarkable. Starting with just 800 Dirhams in 1978 on the shores of the UAE, he has navigated his way to the top, building an international marine conglomerate that spans Dubai, India, China, the Philippines, and Italy. Known as a legend among expatriate Keralites in the Middle East, Panicker has proven that success is a product of perseverance and grit. His first years were spent in a sweltering, mud-walled house he shared with other migrant workers, but he soon turned the tide, armed with boundless determination and analytical prowess. Today, this master shipbuilder has earned a place in the hall of fame of Malayali achievers, celebrated for his journey across uncharted waters in the marine industry.
Panicker’s Early Drive to Succeed
Growing up as the fourth of seven children in a middle-class family in Chemmakkad, a village in Kerala’s Kollam district, Panicker’s early years were shaped by poverty and adversity. Life in rural Kerala in the 1950s was very difficult as opportunities seemed few and far. Yet, from a young age, Panicker displayed a keen determination to break free from the shackles of deprivation.
“I had nothing except an education that I knew could lead to something more,” Panicker shares. “I always believed that hard work and integrity would one day get me closer to my dreams.” Driven by this aspiration, he completed a diploma in Machine Operations from the Industrial Training Institute and began his career with a National Apprenticeship that took him to the northern parts of India. This journey proved to be the vital building blocks of the foundation for his expertise in machinery and operations, which would later unlock the key to a bright future.
Defining Years and Valuable Lessons
In the late 1970s, as Dubai rapidly developed into a major trade and industrial hub, Panicker saw an opportunity and immediately joined the marine repair and service industry. He worked across various shipyards, gaining hands-on experience. His expertise in machinery operations, paired with his eagerness to learn, allowed him to prove his abilities and advance in his field. Over two decades, Panicker took on various roles, steadily climbing the ranks to become a manager. This key position allowed him to refine his technical skills, build essential industry connections, and grasp the intricacies of the marine sector.
“Those years were truly transformative for me,” Panicker recalls. “I worked tirelessly, handling complex projects that fueled my desire to build something of my own. My time at Grandweld taught me the importance of precision and quality—principles that became essential in my future ventures.”

The Birth of Expert United Marine Services LLC
At the turn of the millennium, Panicker took a courageous leap into the marine industry by founding Expert United Marine Services (EUMS) in Dubai with just one employee. Armed with his vast knowledge and industry experience, he initially focused on ship repair services before expanding into industrial marine engines, generators, and essential equipment for ships of all sizes. His relentless commitment to excellence and quality set EUMS apart as a leading name in marine services.
“Starting from scratch was not easy,” Panicker reflects. “There were tough times of self-doubt and financial strain, but I always believed in the value of the business I was building. I knew there was a growing demand for reliable, high-quality marine services.” Today, EUMS has become a global leader, employing around 300 people and serving clients worldwide. Its renowned ship repair capabilities have made it a preferred dry dock destination for vessels from around the globe.
Expanding Horizons: Al Suhail and Beyond
Seeing untapped potential, Panicker launched Al Suhail Ship Maintenance Services in 2008, focusing on trading marine engines and vital equipment. By 2012, he expanded further with Top Star Ship Repairing Services, concentrating on repair and maintenance, particularly in dry dock and deck machinery. These ventures solidified his stronghold in Dubai’s marine services industry. International expansion followed with a partnership in Morocco through Al Suhail Logistics.
In 2020, Panicker struck a major deal with Dubai Maritime City (DMC) for an industrial plot, demonstrating his foresight and desire to innovate. The partnership allowed him to set up a dedicated space in DMC’s industrial hub, marking a significant milestone in his career.

Commitment to Quality and Family Values
Despite his many achievements, Panicker has remained grounded, viewing his team as a family. He fosters an environment of mutual respect and values the contributions of each employee. “When you don’t have the time, intellect, or strength to accomplish a task, you hire others’ expertise and compensate them fairly,” he believes.
His dedication to his employees was especially evident during the COVID-19 pandemic when he took measures to safeguard the health and well-being of his team while ensuring business continuity and job security.

The Power of Persistence and Faith
Panicker attributes his success to unwavering perseverance and a deep faith in his journey. “Success is a continuous process of growth, learning, and giving,” he says. “Hard work is always rewarded, and fortune followed as I dedicated myself to building something meaningful.” His belief in ethical prosperity—achieved without compromising anyone else’s peace or happiness—has been the driving force behind his triumphs, enabling him to weather numerous challenges and steer his empire to greater success.
Accolades and Recognition
Throughout his illustrious career, Panicker has earned numerous accolades, including his recent appointment as the Honorary Trade Commissioner of Brunei to India. He was also listed among the “Most Powerful 100 Malayalees in the GCC,” a testament to his influence in the region. His dedication to social service is also noteworthy; he served as the President of the Gurudeva Charitable Trust, focusing on community welfare, and as Chairman of Sree Narayana College of Medical Sciences, helping bring quality healthcare and education to Kerala.
A unique honor bestowed on Panicker is the naming of a ship after him. An Emirati businessman, impressed by his craftsmanship, requested a ship be named “Panicker” as a tribute to his dedication.
A trained tabla player, Panicker balances his passion for music and art with his professional life, demonstrating that it is possible to harmonize personal interests and career achievements.

Steering Toward New Shores
In recent years, Panicker has taken bold steps to position his companies at the forefront of marine innovation and sustainability. His firms now offer specialized packages for marine power equipment, essential for ships to meet clients’ diverse needs. The company has also ventured into shipbuilding—a natural progression for Panicker, inspired by his desire to create vessels that can withstand any storm.
The recent WEICHAI UAE dealership agreement marks another key milestone, expanding the company’s product offerings and enhancing its service capabilities. Panicker’s reputation for excellence continues to earn him the trust and respect of clients worldwide.
Legacy and Future Vision
As he reflects on his remarkable journey, Panicker remains humble but optimistic about the future. “I’ve been fortunate to watch my vision come to life, starting with nothing but hard work and determination,” he says. His journey from a small village in Kerala to a global marine industry leader is nothing short of inspiring. Alongside his wife, Sujatha, and their three daughters—Liny, Simi, and Nimi—Panicker has created hundreds of jobs, supported the marine industry in the Middle East, and motivated countless individuals to pursue their dreams with dedication and integrity.
