Oncologist Critically Injured in Stabbing at Chennai Hospital, Sparks Protests Over Safety Concerns
Dr. Balaji Jagannath, an oncologist at the Kalaignar Centenary Super Speciality Hospital (KCSSH) in Chennai, was critically injured on Wednesday after being stabbed by Vignesh, 26, allegedly in a dispute over the treatment of Vignesh’s mother. The incident took place around 10:30 a.m., with Vignesh reportedly accusing Dr. Jagannath of negligence regarding his mother’s cancer care before attacking him with a kitchen knife. Dr. Jagannath is currently in critical condition in the ICU, while Vignesh and four others are in police custody.
The attack has sparked outrage among medical professionals, who have called for better security and staffing in state-run hospitals. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin condemned the incident and ordered a detailed inquiry, emphasizing the need to safeguard government medical staff. Despite reassurances from Health Minister Ma Subramanian, who announced plans to fill over 3,500 doctor vacancies by early 2025, doctors argue that the severe staffing shortages are leading to unsustainable workloads and heightened tensions.
In response, doctors at KCSSH initiated a temporary strike, halting non-emergency services in protest. Professional associations have urged the government to address critical staffing shortfalls as doctors face increasing patient aggression amid understaffed facilities. Senior medical professionals voiced their frustrations, with one government doctor publicly criticizing the system’s inefficiencies and calling for immediate reforms.
