India-China Ties Improve as LAC Disengagement Brings Stability

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, addressing the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, highlighted progress in India-China relations following a significant disengagement agreement along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh. This development comes after a prolonged standoff triggered by the 2020 Galwan Valley clash, which marked the first fatalities in 45 years along the disputed border. Jaishankar noted that diplomatic efforts and recent agreements have brought the ties between the two nations on a path of gradual normalization.

The Minister emphasized India’s commitment to a fair and mutually acceptable boundary resolution while recalling a series of past agreements aimed at maintaining peace and tranquility in border areas. He stressed the severe implications of the 2020 disruptions, which led to the deployment of heavy weaponry and a prolonged military standoff. The latest disengagement covers the contentious areas of Depsang and Demchok, with Indian and Chinese troops resuming coordinated patrolling in November as part of confidence-building measures.

Jaishankar also reiterated the importance of continuous dialogue to ensure lasting stability, with ongoing talks at the local commanders’ level. Beijing, in a parallel statement, committed to implementing the terms of the agreement while working toward broader cooperation. The recent truce reflects a shared intent to restore normalcy and reinforce long-term peace along the LAC.
