Parliament Disrupted Again, Chairman Dhankhar Cites Murphy’s Law Amid Stalemate
Both Houses of Parliament faced adjournment on Monday amid continuous disruptions, with Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar expressing frustration over the deadlock. Linking the impasse to Murphy’s Law—“anything that can go wrong will go wrong”—Dhankhar suggested a “deliberate algorithm” was preventing the House from functioning effectively. Despite his emotional appeal to lawmakers to uphold the Constitution’s mandate, opposition protests on issues like Gautam Adani’s indictment, ethnic violence in Manipur, and Sambhal clashes derailed proceedings.
Dhankhar’s repeated calls to proceed with the scheduled agenda were overshadowed by uproarious scenes, leaving him to remark that the House was achieving the “antithesis” of its constitutional purpose. Opposition leaders, however, criticized the government for stalling debates on pressing issues. Congress MP Jairam Ramesh described the adjournments as “extraordinary,” claiming there was minimal sloganeering and accusing the government of avoiding accountability on contentious topics.
The Winter Session, which began on November 25, has yet to see meaningful discussions. Opposition parties had sought a two-day debate on the Constitution’s 75th anniversary, celebrated on November 26, but the dates for the session remain undecided. Meanwhile, both Houses are set to reconvene on Tuesday, with little hope for immediate resolution.
