Gujarat Congress Leaders Switch Allegiance to BJP Ahead of Rahul Gandhi’s Yatra

In a significant political development, former Gujarat Congress chief and ex-MLA Arjun Modhwadia, along with the party’s former working president Ambarish Der, have joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The duo, accompanied by several supporters, was inducted into the ruling party at the BJP state headquarters ‘Kamalam’ by State BJP chief C R Paatil, who welcomed them with saffron caps and scarves. This move came just a day after both leaders resigned from the Congress, expressing their dissatisfaction with the party’s decision to boycott the Lord Ram temple consecration ceremony in Ayodhya.

Arjun Modhwadia, a seasoned politician associated with the Congress for nearly four decades, submitted his resignation as an MLA on Monday. Having represented the Porbandar seat, Modhwadia has been a prominent figure in Gujarat politics, previously serving as the leader of the opposition and state unit president. His departure, along with that of Der and former Union minister Naran Rathwa from the Congress to the BJP, marks a significant shift in the state’s political landscape.

The exits of Modhwadia and Der occur notably just days before Rahul Gandhi-led Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’s scheduled entry into Gujarat, underscoring the ongoing political realignment in the state. Modhwadia’s and Der’s resignations follow those of other Congress MLAs, indicating a trend of defection to the BJP and impacting the Congress’ strength in the Gujarat assembly.
