India’s External Affairs Minister to Attend SCO Meeting in Pakistan

India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, is set to travel to Pakistan for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council of Heads of Government meeting on October 15 and 16, marking the first visit by an Indian external affairs minister to Pakistan since December 2015. The announcement was made by external affairs ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal during a media briefing, emphasizing that Jaishankar’s visit is solely for the SCO summit.

This visit comes amid historically strained relations between India and Pakistan, particularly following India’s military action in Balakot in February 2019 and the revocation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status in August 2019. Despite these tensions, India maintains its commitment to fostering normal relations with Pakistan, contingent upon an environment free from terrorism and hostility.

The SCO, which includes India, China, Russia, Pakistan, and several Central Asian countries, serves as a significant platform for regional security and economic cooperation. India’s engagement with the SCO underscores its focus on strengthening security collaborations, particularly through the organization’s Regional Anti-Terrorism Structure (RATS). This summit, being the second-highest forum in the SCO, provides an opportunity for India to reinforce its role within the bloc, having previously chaired the organization last year.
