Kalpana Soren Steps into Leadership Role Amid Hemant Soren’s Absence

Over a month after former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren was arrested on corruption charges, his wife, Kalpana Soren, made her first public appearance at a Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) event on March 4. Kalpana, 39, broke down while speaking about her husband’s arrest, which came just months before the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Since Hemant’s resignation and subsequent arrest on January 31, Kalpana has taken charge, holding over 30 election rallies and emphasizing her father-in-law Shibu Soren’s contributions to Jharkhand’s statehood.

Kalpana Soren, initially maintaining a low profile and running a play school, has now become a prominent figure in JMM, actively participating in ticket distribution and election rallies for the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA). Her leadership potential has been noted by JMM leaders, especially after her emotional address alongside Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra at a rally in Godda on May 22. While some speculate she might replace Champai Soren as chief minister, JMM insiders caution that such a move might not be well-received, considering internal party dynamics and upcoming elections.

Despite her nascent political role, Kalpana’s diverse background and newfound popularity among voters, particularly women, are seen as assets for JMM. However, political commentator Sudhir Pal suggests that while Kalpana’s presence provides continuity, her elevation could also invite criticism regarding nepotism and corruption within the party. Kalpana herself acknowledges the strength she draws from party workers’ support, rooted in the legacy of JMM’s secular ideology and her family’s enduring public service.
