Kamal Haasan Accuses BJP of Creating ‘Hindia,’ Opposes Delimitation Move

Actor and politician Kamal Haasan has accused the BJP-led central government of attempting to create “Hindia” by imposing Hindi on non-Hindi-speaking states. Speaking at an all-party meeting convened by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, the Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) chief strongly opposed the Centre’s three-language formula under the National Education Policy (NEP), calling it a violation of federal principles.
Haasan warned against tampering with Tamil linguistic identity, emphasizing that Tamilians have historically fought to protect their language rights. Haasan also voiced strong opposition to the proposed delimitation exercise, which aims to adjust parliamentary constituencies based on population. He argued that such changes would disproportionately affect southern states that have successfully implemented population control measures, leading to a loss of parliamentary representation. “Why are they repairing something that is not broken?” he questioned, criticizing the move as unnecessary and undemocratic.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, backed by the Congress and other regional parties, demanded that the delimitation exercise be based on the 1971 Census for the next 30 years. He proposed forming a committee of MPs and representatives from southern states to coordinate a unified response against the Centre’s plan. Tamil Nadu has long opposed the three-language policy and sees the delimitation move as an attempt to diminish its political influence in national governance.
