Olympic Wrestler Sushil Kumar Granted Bail in Murder Case

The Delhi High Court has granted bail to Olympic wrestler Sushil Kumar in connection with the 2021 murder of junior wrestler Sagar Dhankar. A Bench led by Justice Sanjiv Narula approved his release upon furnishing a ₹50,000 bond and two sureties of the same amount. Kumar, a two-time Olympic medallist, was accused of murder, rioting, unlawful assembly, and criminal conspiracy after Dhankar succumbed to injuries from an attack at Chhatrasal Stadium.

The altercation, which took place on May 4, 2021, stemmed from a property dispute between Kumar and Dhankar, who had previously lived in a flat owned by the wrestler in Model Town. Delhi Police named Kumar the prime accused in a 170-page chargesheet, citing tensions over Dhankar’s reluctance to vacate the flat. Following the incident, Kumar was on the run for over two weeks before his arrest from Mundka in western Delhi. He had been in judicial custody since June 2, 2021.

Kumar has been granted interim bail multiple times in the past, including in March 2023 to perform his father’s last rites and in July 2023 for a knee operation. After his medical treatment, he surrendered in Tihar Jail in August 2023. Now, with the Delhi High Court’s latest ruling, he has been released on bail in the ongoing murder case.
