Congress Spokesperson Sparks Controversy with Remarks on Rohit Sharma

Congress found itself in a tight spot after its National Spokesperson Shama Mohamed stirred controversy by calling Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma “fat for a sportsperson” and the “most unimpressive” captain in the country’s history. Her now-deleted social media post triggered widespread backlash, particularly from BJP leaders and cricket fans, prompting the Congress party to intervene and ask her to take it down. Defending her remarks, Mohamed claimed she was making a general observation about an athlete’s fitness rather than body-shaming.
The BJP condemned her statement, accusing the Congress of disrespecting a World Cup-winning captain and engaging in body-shaming. BJP leader Radhika Khera slammed the Congress, alleging that the party had a history of undermining athletes and mocking national icons. She also took a swipe at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, contrasting his leadership struggles with Rohit Sharma’s success in guiding India to a World Cup victory. Congress distanced itself from Mohamed’s remarks, asserting that the party holds sporting icons in high regard and does not endorse statements that undermine their legacy.
Meanwhile, on the field, India secured a decisive 44-run victory over New Zealand in their final group-stage match of the 2025 Champions Trophy. Despite an early dismissal of captain Rohit Sharma, India’s bowlers, led by Varun Chakaravarthy, put up an outstanding performance, restricting New Zealand to 205 runs while chasing 250. With this win, India advanced to the semi-finals, where they will face Australia in a high-stakes clash on March 4.
