Election Commission Issues Notice to KCR for Alleged Derogatory Comments

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued a notice to Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) president and former Chief Minister of Telangana, K Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR), seeking an explanation for his comments against Congress leaders during an April 5 press conference in Siricilla. The Commission alleges that these remarks might have breached the Model Code of Conduct (MCC). Avinash Kumar, principal secretary of the ECI, warned that failure to respond by 11 AM Thursday could lead to decisive action without further communication.

According to the complaint lodged by G Niranjan, senior vice-president of the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee, KCR made “vulgar, derogatory and objectionable” statements against Congress members. Subsequent reports from the district election officer of Rajanna Siricilla and the state chief electoral officer confirmed the usage of inappropriate language and even threats during the event.

The ECI has reminded KCR of the importance of adhering to the MCC, which mandates that political criticisms be limited to policies, programmes, and public actions. The notice marks another instance of the commission reprimanding KCR, who has been previously warned during the 2019 and 2023 elections for similar violations.
