CBI Names ‘Abhishek Banerjee’ in West Bengal Teachers’ Recruitment Scam Chargesheet

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has named an “Abhishek Banerjee” in its third chargesheet related to the West Bengal teachers’ recruitment scam, alleging that he demanded ₹15 crore for illegal appointments. The agency stated that Sujay Krishna Bhadra, an associate of Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee, was told to halt appointments unless additional payments were made. However, the chargesheet does not specify the identity of the person named. Trinamool Congress dismissed the allegations, calling them a politically motivated attempt to tarnish Abhishek Banerjee’s image.

His lawyer, Sanjoy Basu, criticized the CBI for inserting “unverified statements” without corroborative evidence, accusing central agencies of being misused to push a political agenda. Banerjee, who has been questioned multiple times by the CBI and Enforcement Directorate (ED), reiterated that the accusations lack factual backing. The teachers’ recruitment scam came to light in 2022 with the arrest of former Education Minister Partha Chatterjee and officials from the West Bengal School Service Commission.

The ED seized around ₹50 crore in cash and jewelry from Chatterjee’s aide, Arpita Mukherjee. Investigations revealed widespread irregularities in teacher appointments, with reports of undeserving candidates securing jobs, prompting legal scrutiny and multiple arrests.
