Mamata Banerjee Urges Peace Amid Unrest in Bangladesh
Amid the ongoing unrest in neighbouring Bangladesh, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday appealed to the state’s people to maintain peace and avoid provocation. She emphasized the importance of staying calm and refraining from any actions that could incite violence. “I would appeal to all citizens of West Bengal to maintain peace and avoid all forms of provocation,” Ms Banerjee told reporters at the West Bengal assembly.
Declining to comment directly on the developments in Bangladesh, Banerjee stated that it is the responsibility of the Ministry of External Affairs to address the situation. She assured that whatever decision the Centre takes on the issue, the state government would comply. “Whatever decision the Centre takes on this issue, we will abide by it,” she said.
In related news, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country amid massive protests against her government, which have resulted in over 106 deaths in the past two days. Hasina reportedly landed at Hindon Airbase near Delhi on Monday. The situation in Bangladesh remains tense, with the country’s leadership in flux as Army General Waker-Uz-Zaman is expected to take charge.
