Manipur to Deport Residents Who Arrived After 1961 in Bid to Protect Ethnic Communities

In a significant announcement, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh declared that individuals who settled in the state post-1961, regardless of their caste or community, will be identified and deported. This decision comes as a measure to protect the ethnic communities of Manipur, a state that has been engulfed in sectarian tensions since May 2023. The Chief Minister attributed the prolonged violence to the influx of the drug mafia and illegal migrants, particularly from Myanmar, stating the action as crucial for the preservation of the state’s cultural identity and existence.

Addressing the launch of a skill development program, Singh elaborated on the state’s current predicament as a battle for survival and identity, underlining the critical need to resolve the crisis. He criticized the shortsightedness of some politicians for the insecurity faced by the current generation and asserted the government’s commitment to securing a stable future for the coming generations. The Chief Minister’s statements underscore the severity of the situation and the government’s urgency in addressing the issue.

Furthermore, Singh highlighted the significance of Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s announcement regarding the termination of the India-Myanmar Free Movement Regime (FMR), viewing it as a pivotal step in combating internal security challenges and demographic changes. The government’s initiatives, including the construction of fences and the revocation of the FMR, aim to curb illegal immigration, drug trafficking, and weapons smuggling. Expressing gratitude towards the Honda India Foundation for their initiative ‘Buniyaad – Aatmanirbharta Ka Adhaar’ in Manipur, Singh praised the local community for their hospitality, discipline, and cleanliness.
