Murder Case: Accused Faces Additional Charges Under SC/ST Atrocities Act

In a significant development in the murder case of a 20-year-old woman in Uran, Navi Mumbai, police have added charges under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act against the accused, Dawood Shaikh. Shaikh, who was apprehended in the Shahapur area of Gulbarga, Karnataka, on Tuesday morning, was brought to Navi Mumbai the same night and is currently in police custody in Belapur. He is expected to appear in court later today.

The woman’s body was discovered early Saturday morning, following her parents’ missing persons report filed on July 25. An autopsy revealed she had died from multiple stab wounds. Initially, the police registered a case under section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and formed eight teams to locate the suspect. After detaining several individuals, they traced Shaikh, who had fled to Karnataka after a 2019 complaint under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act was filed against him.

Shaikh, who previously worked as a driver in Karnataka, was reportedly in touch with the victim. Investigators believe a heated argument between the two may have led to the murder, though the exact motive is still under investigation.
