Shah Rukh Khan and Ness Wadia Clash Over IPL Retention Policy
In a recent meeting held by the Indian Cricket Board (BCCI) with Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise owners, a heated argument erupted between Kolkata Knight Riders co-owner Shah Rukh Khan and Punjab Kings co-owner Ness Wadia. The dispute centered on the retention policy and the use of the Right to Match card for the upcoming IPL 2025 mega auction. Shah Rukh Khan argued for allowing more retentions to maintain a stable roster and reward teams for developing young talent, while Wadia opposed the idea of excessive retentions.
The BCCI confirmed in a statement on Wednesday that the meeting featured a ‘productive dialogue’ with team owners regarding preparations for IPL 2025. Despite the intense discussions, no final decisions were made. The IPL governing council will review the talking points before making any official rulings. The debate highlighted the differing perspectives among team owners on the importance of mega auctions and retention policies.
Attendees of the meeting included prominent figures such as Kavya Maran from Sunrisers Hyderabad, Sanjiv Goenka and his son Shashwat from Lucknow Super Giants, KK Grand and Parth Jindal from Delhi Capitals, and Manoj Badale and Ranjit Barthakur from Rajasthan Royals. Representatives from other franchises, including Mumbai Indians, participated online. The discussions emphasized the complexities and competing interests involved in shaping the future of the IPL.
