Nihang Sikh Allegedly Commits Murder in Punjab Gurdwara Over Sacrilege Claims

In a shocking incident on Monday night, a Nihang Sikh identified as Ramandeep Singh allegedly murdered a young man at the Chaura Khooh gurdwara in Phagwara town, Kapurthala district, Punjab. Singh, who later posted a video on social media, claimed that the victim had confessed to being sent for sacrilege. The accused has barricaded himself inside the gurdwara, as police officials initiate an investigation into this disturbing act of violence.

This marks the second episode of violence involving Nihang Sikhs in Kapurthala within the last three months. In November, a clash between Nihangs and the police resulted in the death of a policeman as the law enforcement authorities attempted to resolve a dispute over gurdwara control. The Nihangs, known for their historical association with Sikh warrior traditions, have been previously linked to grisly killings, often connected to sacrilege.

The Nihang Sikh community, recognizable by their distinctive blue robes and traditional weaponry like swords, traces its roots back to the establishment of the Khalsa by Guru Gobind Singh in 1699. The recent surge in violence within the community raises concerns about maintaining law and order, prompting authorities to address the issue and prevent further instances of religiously motivated violence.
