Ola Faces Flak Over Treatment of IAF Veteran in Wheelchair

Ola, the app-based cab operator, is under scrutiny following a complaint filed by Wing Commander Shantanu, an Indian Air Force (IAF) veteran and para shooter, regarding alleged ill-treatment during a recent cab ride. The Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities (CCPD) issued a notice to Ola Cabs, demanding a response within 30 days after the veteran, who has an 80% locomotor disability, faced distressing treatment.

The incident occurred when Wing Commander Shantanu, accompanied by his wife, attempted to board an Ola cab for a short trip. Despite the customary practice of accommodating folded wheelchairs in the back seat, the unidentified driver reportedly responded aggressively, refusing to allow the wheelchair inside and using derogatory language. The veteran, who has overcome significant challenges since a life-altering road accident in 2017, felt humiliated and filed a complaint seeking action against the driver.

Wing Commander Shantanu’s journey has been one of resilience and remarkable achievements. Overcoming paralysis after the accident, he delved into sports, achieving milestones in swimming and rowing. His prowess led him to secure two gold medals at a state-level swimming competition organized by the Paralympics Swimming Association of Maharashtra. He further made history by representing India at the Asian Rowing Training Camp and Championship in South Korea, securing the 5th position in Asia. His commitment to representing India continued as he participated in the World Rowing Asia and Oceania Continental Olympic and Paralympic Qualification Regatta in Tokyo in April 2021.

The CCPD’s notice to Ola has brought attention to the treatment of persons with disabilities, particularly veterans who have displayed exceptional courage and achievements despite their challenges. Ola’s response to the notice is awaited as the incident has sparked discussions about inclusivity and respect for individuals with disabilities in public services.
