‘Parasite’ Actor Lee Sun-kyun Found Dead in Apparent Suicide Amid Drug Scandal

South Korean actor Lee Sun-kyun, renowned for his role in the Oscar-winning film “Parasite,” was discovered deceased in a vehicle at a central Seoul park, reportedly in an apparent suicide, according to Yonhap news agency. The 48-year-old actor had been under investigation by the police for alleged use of marijuana and other psychoactive drugs, a scandal that led to his removal from ongoing television and commercial projects, tarnishing his once-celebrated image.

Lee Sun-kyun, a graduate of South Korea’s esteemed Korea National University of Arts, debuted in 2001 and gained acclaim for diverse roles, including a charismatic chef and a diligent architectural engineer betrayed by his wife. Internationally recognized for his portrayal of the wealthy patriarch in “Parasite,” his latest film, the critically acclaimed horror flick “Sleep,” showcased his talent and was featured in Cannes festival’s Critics’ Week. The actor expressed remorse to reporters in October, apologizing for the disappointment caused and acknowledging the pain his family endured amidst the scandal. South Korea’s stringent laws on illegal drugs, with severe consequences even for citizens consuming such substances abroad, framed the backdrop of Lee’s legal entanglement.

Lee Sun-kyun is survived by his wife, actress Jeon Hye-jin, and their two sons. His untimely death marks a tragic end to the career of an actor celebrated for his versatile performances, leaving behind a legacy that spans both national and global acclaim.
