Patanjali Ayurved Issues Unconditional Apology to Supreme Court
In a recent turn of events, Patanjali Ayurved has submitted an unconditional apology to the Supreme Court following a notice that questioned the company’s adherence to an earlier court undertaking. The Supreme Court had sought explanations for potentially initiating contempt proceedings against Patanjali for an advertisement issued on December 4, 2023, which was seen as flouting the court’s November 21, 2023, directive. This directive had explicitly instructed the company to refrain from making any claims regarding the medicinal efficacy of its products or making statements against any system of medicine.
The apology came after the Supreme Court, led by Justices Hima Kohli and Ahsanuddin Amanullah, responded to a plea by the Indian Medical Association (IMA), accusing Patanjali of violating the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954. The company’s Managing Director Acharya Balkrishna and Baba Ramdev were ordered to personally appear before the court. In an affidavit, Balkrishna expressed regret over the oversight and assured the court of measures to prevent future occurrences, stating the incident as unintentional and a result of the media department’s unawareness of the court’s order.
The affidavit also touched on the broader context of promoting Ayurveda, arguing for a modern interpretation of the Drugs and Magic Remedies Act and the Drugs & Cosmetics Act to accommodate contemporary scientific research in Ayurveda. Patanjali emphasized its commitment to promoting healthier lifestyles through Ayurvedic products, backed by scientific evidence, aiming to alleviate the burden on healthcare infrastructure.
