Supreme Court Reacts to Alleged Assault on Advocate Gaurav Bhatia in Greater Noida Court

The Supreme Court of India has taken suo motu cognisance of the reported assault on senior advocate Gaurav Bhatia, who is also a national spokesperson for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and advocate Muskan Gupta. The incident, which took place at the Gautam Budh Nagar district court in Greater Noida, came to the court’s attention following a mention by Attorney General R Venkataramani along with a group of lawyers. In response, the Supreme Court has sought a detailed report from the district judge and issued a notice to the local bar association concerning the matter.

According to reports, the altercation occurred inside a courtroom where Gaurav Bhatia was appearing in a case related to YouTuber Elvish Yadav. Despite agreeing to adjourn the matter due to an ongoing lawyers’ strike, Bhatia experienced misbehavior from another lawyer, who allegedly snatched his advocate’s band. This action prompted a strong reaction from Bhatia, who emphasized the significance of the advocate’s band and declared such actions intolerable. The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) has formally communicated these events to the Supreme Court, underlining the gravity of the situation.

While the local bar association’s secretary, Dhirendra Bhati, insists that the matter was resolved amicably and denied any misbehavior, the SCBA’s letter has led to an official inquiry into the incident. The police, as stated by Additional Deputy Commissioner Hridesh Katheria, have yet to receive any formal complaints. This incident has sparked a significant discussion within the legal community and underscores the importance of maintaining decorum and respect within judicial premises.
