Zomato Reverses Decision on “Pure Veg Mode” Green Uniforms Amid Backlash

In a surprising turn of events, Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal announced the rollback of the decision to introduce green uniforms for its new “Pure Veg Mode” service, following widespread criticism from the public. The announcement, made via social media platform X, clarified that Zomato’s entire delivery fleet, including the newly introduced segment catering specifically to vegetarians, will continue to wear the traditional red uniforms. This decision came shortly after Zomato introduced a “Pure Veg Fleet” in India, aimed at serving the country’s significant vegetarian population, with Goyal himself making deliveries to showcase the new initiative.

The initial introduction of green uniforms for the vegetarian delivery fleet faced immediate backlash, with concerns raised about the potential for differential treatment by residential welfare associations (RWAs) and the risk of physical safety for the riders. Critics argued that the visible distinction could lead to unnecessary complications and segregation on the ground. In response to the feedback, Goyal stated that while the vegetarian fleet will remain operational, it will no longer be visually distinguished from the regular fleet, ensuring uniformity and safety for all delivery partners.

Acknowledging the feedback and criticism from the community, Goyal expressed gratitude for the dialogue that led to the reconsideration of the policy. He emphasized the importance of community input in refining the company’s approach and assured that Zomato’s priority remains the physical safety of its riders and the satisfaction of its customers. This move reflects Zomato’s commitment to adapt and respond to feedback, even as it seeks innovative ways to cater to the diverse dietary preferences of its user base in India.
