President accepts Madras HC Chief Justice’s resignation

President Ram Nath Kovind has accepted the resignation, submitted by the Chief Justice of Madras High Court, Vijaya Kamlesh Tahilramani. The position vacated by the resigned judge has been awarded to Justice Vineet Kothari temporarily by the President of the country.

Earlier, the Supreme Court Collegium transferred the Madras HC Chief Justice to Meghalaya as its Chief Justice. The Judge, who was unhappy with the decision of the SC Collegium, requested for the reconsideration of the order. But, the Collegium declined to accept the reconsideration request filed by the Judge.

As per a report, the aforesaid developments have gradually led to the resignation of the Madras HC Chief Justice.

The resigned Chief Justice is a former Judge of the Bombay High Court. She is also a former Acting Chief Justice of the same court; she held that prestigious position almost thrice between the year 2015 and the year 2018.

The resignation of the Judge has opened a fresh debate on the sensitive topic of Supreme Court Collegium.

It is learned that the SC Collegium will appoint a permanent Chief Justice to the Madras High Court soon.

The incident has occurred at the time a structural change is demanded for the judicial system of the country.
