Ramdev’s Supreme Apology: Ad Controversy Twist
In a recent development, Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev issued an unconditional apology to the Supreme Court for failing to comply with its previous order regarding misleading advertisements. Despite this gesture, the Supreme Court labeled the apology as mere “lip service” but decided to give Ramdev another opportunity to file his response in the alleged contempt proceedings. The matter is now slated for a hearing on April 10.
Baba Ramdev, along with Patanjali Ayurved’s managing director Acharya Balkrishna, made a court appearance following the issuance of show cause notices questioning why contempt proceedings should not be initiated against them. The court underscored the importance of respecting its orders and admonished Ramdev for what it termed as “absolute defiance” of its directives.
This legal action stems from Patanjali Ayurved Ltd.’s assurance to the court back in November 2023, promising not to contravene any laws related to advertising or branding. Despite this assurance, the Supreme Court found the company in violation of its order, particularly critiquing statements made regarding the medicinal efficacy of its products. This case draws further attention as it follows a plea by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) alleging that Ramdev led a smear campaign against the Covid vaccination drive and the modern system of medicine.
