Ratan Tata’s Final Pet Project: ₹165 Crore Animal Hospital Opens in Mumbai

In one of his final philanthropic ventures, the late Ratan Tata, chairman emeritus of Tata Sons, realized his dream of opening a world-class animal hospital in Mahalaxmi, Mumbai. The five-storey, 98,000-square-foot facility, which opened in July, offers 24×7 emergency care, advanced diagnostics, specialized surgeries, and ICUs, providing care for nearly 200 animals. British veterinarian Thomas Heathcote leads the ₹165 crore hospital.

The idea for the hospital, initially set for Navi Mumbai, was shifted to a more central location in Mahalaxmi due to accessibility concerns for pet owners. Tata was inspired to create this state-of-the-art facility after a personal experience with his own pet’s medical needs abroad. The hospital is equipped with surgery units, an in-house pathology lab, and wards for a wide range of treatments, including dermatology, dental care, and ophthalmology.

Shantanu Naidu, a close associate of Tata and founder of Motopaws, serves on the board of directors. The philanthropist, who passed away at 86, had recently dismissed rumors about his health, stating he was undergoing routine medical examinations due to his age. His legacy of compassion for both people and animals endures through this remarkable facility.
