Sabyasachi Mukherjee Makes History at the Met Gala, Dresses Alia Bhatt

In a groundbreaking moment for Indian fashion, designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee became the first Indian fashion designer to grace the Met Gala red carpet. Clad in a piece from his own Resort 2024 collection, an embroidered cotton duster coat, Mukherjee accessorized his ensemble with an array of jewels including tourmalines, pearls, emeralds, and diamonds from his Sabyasachi High Jewellery line. Complementing his outfit with tinted sunglasses and brown loafers, Mukherjee’s look was a testament to understated elegance.

Additionally, Mukherjee designed a breathtaking outfit for Bollywood actress Alia Bhatt, marking her second appearance at the prestigious fashion event. Bhatt wore a sheer pastel sari, intricately detailed with silk floss, glass beading, and semi-precious gemstones, reflecting the natural elements of earth, sky, and sea. The saree is a product of meticulous craftsmanship, involving 163 artisans and 1,965 man-hours of labor, showcasing the heritage and sophisticated elegance inspired by Indian nobility.

The Met Gala, held annually on the first Monday of May at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, continues to be a pivotal event in the global fashion calendar. This year’s theme, “The Garden of Time,” saw a range of interpretations from various designers. Sabyasachi’s participation not only highlights his esteemed status in the fashion industry but also signifies a moment of pride and achievement for Indian craftsmanship on the global stage.
