Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Launches New Financial Assistance Scheme for Boys

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin will unveil a new financial assistance programme named ‘Tamil Pudhalvan’ on Friday, aimed at supporting boys who pursue higher education after completing their studies in government-run schools. This initiative extends the benefits of the previously launched ‘Pudhumai Penn’ scheme, which offers Rs 1,000 monthly assistance to girls in similar circumstances. The new scheme is expected to support several lakhs of students, reinforcing the state’s commitment to promoting higher education.

Since its inception on September 5, 2022, the ‘Pudhumai Penn’ scheme has significantly impacted female students, with over 2.09 lakh beneficiaries in 2022-2023 and an additional 64,231 added in 2024. The Tamil Nadu government has allocated Rs 371.77 crore for this scheme so far, with Rs 370 crore earmarked for the 2024-2025 financial year. The scheme was recently expanded to include girl students in Tamil medium government-aided schools.

Under the ‘Tamil Pudhalvan’ scheme, boys who studied in state government schools from Class 6 to 12 and continue their education at the higher level will receive Rs 1,000 per month. The scheme aims to benefit approximately 3.28 lakh students, continuing the state’s efforts to enhance educational opportunities and support students from government schools.
