Former West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee Passes Away at 80

Former West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has died at the age of 80 at his residence in Ballygunge, Kolkata. The announcement was confirmed by his family and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) state secretary Mohammed Salim. Bhattacharjee, who had been grappling with age-related health issues for some time, is survived by his wife Mira, and daughter Suchetana. His passing marks the end of an era in West Bengal politics, where he served as the Chief Minister from 2000 to 2011.

Mamata Banerjee, the current Chief Minister of West Bengal, expressed her grief over Bhattacharjee’s sudden demise, stating, “I am saddened by the sudden demise of former West Bengal Chief Minister Shri Buddhadev Bhattacharya.” She extended her condolences to his family, CPI(M) party members, and supporters. Bhattacharjee, who took over from Jyoti Basu, was the last Left Chief Minister of Bengal before losing power to Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress in 2011.

Bhattacharjee’s tenure was marked by significant political events, including controversies over land acquisition for industries. In recent years, he had largely withdrawn from public life, residing in a government flat in South Kolkata. His final public appearance was in 2019 when he attended a Left rally at Brigade Parade Grounds with oxygen support, surprising many.
