Trinamool MP Mahua Moitra’s Legal Battle Narrows as Delhi High Court Allows Amendments

In a recent legal development, Trinamool Congress Member of Parliament, Mahua Moitra, has made amendments to her petition before the Delhi High Court. She sought to remove several media houses from her lawsuit against the alleged circulation of fake and defamatory content about her. Her counsel has clarified that the lawsuit will now only continue against two defendants: BJP MP Nishikant Dubey and lawyer Jai Anant Dehadrai.

Nishikant Dubey had accused Ms. Moitra of accepting bribes from a businessman in exchange for asking questions in Parliament. In a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Dubey claimed to have “irrefutable” evidence of these alleged bribes. He further asserted that the majority of Moitra’s recent parliamentary questions were focused on the Adani Group, a conglomerate she has frequently accused of malpractices.

The Delhi High Court has allowed Ms. Moitra to amend her memo of parties, enabling her to delete all defendants except Dubey and Dehadrai and make necessary changes to the pleadings. The case is set to be heard in December.

Ms. Moitra has maintained that her former close friend, Mr. Dehadrai, allegedly sent threatening messages and trespassed into her official residence. She had filed police complaints against him, which were later withdrawn due to settlement talks. In her plea, she has sought a permanent injunction against Mr. Dubey, Mr. Dehadrai, social media platforms, Google, YouTube, and several media houses, with a request to restrain them from making and publishing defamatory statements. She has also claimed provisional damages of ₹2 crore and plans to quantify the final damages later.

This legal battle revolves around allegations made against Mahua Moitra, who strongly denies the claims and contends that they are intended to tarnish her reputation.
