Uproar in Rajya Sabha Over Kharge’s Remark on NEP Debate

A massive uproar erupted in the Rajya Sabha during a debate on the National Education Policy (NEP) after Opposition leader Mallikarjun Kharge made a controversial remark that was later expunged from records. BJP MPs accused Kharge of using unparliamentary language directed at the chairperson, but the Congress chief clarified that his words were aimed at the government’s policies. Amid the heated exchange, Kharge apologised, stating he had no intention of disrespecting the Deputy Chairperson.
The controversy stemmed from the ongoing row over the three-language policy in NEP, with the opposition demanding an apology from Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan for his remarks against DMK MPs. As the discussion turned chaotic, Kharge accused the government of authoritarianism and made an informal Hindi remark, sparking protests from the ruling party. Leader of the House JP Nadda condemned the statement, calling it unacceptable.
In a post on X, Kharge defended his stance, stating that Pradhan’s comments had hurt the self-respect of a section of the country and accused the Modi government of trying to divide the nation. The three-language formula has been a contentious issue, particularly in Tamil Nadu, where the ruling DMK-Congress government has strongly opposed any imposition of Hindi in the state.
