ISRO Scientists Showcase Philanthropy After Chandrayaan-3 Triumph

In a display of remarkable generosity, scientists from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) who played pivotal roles in the success of the Chandrayaan-3 mission are making headlines for their philanthropic endeavors. Dr. P Veeramuthuvel, the 46-year-old project director of Chandrayaan-3, renowned for steering the historic soft-landing on the Moon’s surface, has decided to donate his ₹25 lakh award from the Tamil Nadu government to the alumni associations of the institutions where he studied. Hailing from a humble background, Dr. Veeramuthuvel emphasized that the success of Chandrayaan-3 was a collective effort and stated, “It was more about we and less about me.”

Joining this noble initiative is Dr. M Sankaran, the Director of the UR Rao Satellite Centre in Bengaluru, who has also pledged to donate his ₹25 lakh award to the alumni associations of Thanthai Periyar Government Arts and Science College, Thiruchirapalli, and the Raja Serforji Government Arts and Science College, Thanjavur.

Dr. Veeramuthuvel, who comes from a financially modest background, revealed that his take-home salary of ₹1 lakh per month hasn’t hindered his commitment to philanthropy. Despite being in debt for a home loan of ₹72 lakh, the scientist has chosen to redirect his award money towards institutions that played a crucial role in shaping his career. The selfless acts of these scientists underscore their commitment to national development and serve as an inspiring example of the spirit of giving back to society.
