Zimbabwe Cricket Suspends Two Players for Recreational Drug Use
Zimbabwe Cricket has taken a decisive step by suspending national players Wesley Madhevere and Brandon Mavuta for alleged involvement in recreational drug use. The cricket board confirmed the suspension after both players tested positive for a banned substance during an out-of-competition test. The incident occurred during a recent in-house doping test, prompting immediate suspension until a disciplinary hearing is held to address the breach of anti-doping regulations. The specific drug involved and the timing of the failed tests were not disclosed by the board.
Madhevere, a promising 23-year-old allrounder, and Mavuta, aged 26, have been pivotal members of the Zimbabwean cricket team. Madhevere, especially regarded as a rising talent, made his debut in 2020 and has since showcased his skills in various formats, participating in Tests, one-day internationals, and Twenty20 matches. Mavuta, with experience in Tests, one-day internationals, and T20 internationals, has also been a contributor to the national squad’s performance.
These suspensions add to the recent upheaval in Zimbabwean cricket, following the resignation of coach Dave Houghton earlier in the week. Houghton cited the team’s failure to qualify for the upcoming T20 World Cup and voiced concerns about the team dynamics, stating that he had “lost the change room.” The board has initiated an inquiry into the team’s shortcomings, indicating a period of introspection and reevaluation for Zimbabwe Cricket.
