Actor Mohanlal Resigns as AMMA President Amid Sexual Assault Allegations
In a dramatic turn of events, actor Mohanlal has resigned as president of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), leading to the dissolution of its executive committee. This decision follows serious sexual assault allegations against members of the association, including Siddique and Baburaj, who held the positions of general secretary and joint secretary respectively. Siddique had already resigned from his post over the allegations made by a female actor, while Baburaj, accused by a junior actor, continues to deny the charges.
The controversy surrounding AMMA has intensified criticism of its handling of sexual abuse claims within the Malayalam film industry. The Justice Hema committee’s recent report revealed systemic abuse and poor treatment of junior actors, adding to the growing discontent. Despite the gravity of the report’s findings, AMMA faced backlash for not addressing the issues promptly, leading to the current crisis.
In response to the turmoil, AMMA has announced that a new executive committee will be elected within the next two months. The resignations and the subsequent actions mark a significant upheaval within the influential organization, reflecting ongoing issues of accountability and governance within the film industry.
